The vulva has sweat glands just like the armpit, and sweat bacteria leads to odor. Bodily fluids including menstrual blood, urine, and semen also create external odor. Noticeable odor may be a sign of a pH imbalance. Internal vaginal infections such as BV produce a strong fishy odor which should be discussed with your doctor. If an odor is particularly strong or lasts for several days even with regular hygiene, speak with your doctor about it.
